There is no known way of preventing type 1 diabetes. However for type 2 diabetes, recent study done has shown that people with pre-diabetes can prevent the development of type 2  diabetes. The key is in making healthy lifestyle changes. This include making changes in their diet, increase level of physical activity, quit smoking and reduce intake of alcohol.
 
Changes in ones lifestyle is an important step towards diabetes prevention ! Regular exercise is an important step towards the prevention of type 2 diabetes. It is never too late to make the changes. List of lifestyle changes for diabetes prevention:

Increase physical activity
About 30 minutes a day of physical activity, 5 days a week. These include brisk walking, dancing, park your car further away from your office or stores, get up and stretch during TV commercials, walk around the house while you are on the phone etc.

Control your weight within a healthy range
This is especially important if one is overweight. Reducing your weight will also result in healthier heart, more energy as well as improved self-esteem.

Healthy diet
Look for whole grain food including various types of bread, pasta products and cereals. Go for a balanced diet which is low in simple sugars and fat but high in complex carbohydrates and fiber. Include a variety of fruits and vegetables as part of your diet. Limit intake of sweets and desserts. Reduce fried food and instead opt for baked or broiled food.

Other more obvious ones are quit smoking and reduce intake of alcohol.
